I grew up in LaCanada.

We used to ride out bikes down to Montrose where we could go to the theatre, shop and eat and be safe.

Attended PCC

1981- I went on an adventure and lived in Guadalajara, Mexico where I taught English for a couple of years.

1985- Lived in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where I met an artist who encouraged me to pursue my artistic talents.

I worked in his gallery where I learned and created. I started selling water colors to the tourists and then experimented with different paint techniques and started painting on clothing and fabrics.

1988- Back in California, I ran into a high school friend who owned the Paper Rabbit and she encouraged me to participate in the Montrose Arts and Crafts Festival.

1988-I opened Laurie Jo Designs on Ocean View in Montrose. I continued to participate in Art Festivals and run my store.

1988-Some how I knew that when you opened a business that you join the local Chamber of Commerce.

I participated in any and all events that I could that the Chamber produced.

1999- I relocated my store to Honolulu Ave.

My neighbor, Jim Bates asked me to join the Board of the Chamber. I declined telling him, "I am too busy and if I join I would want to contribute 100%". He was still adamant that I join, telling me that it would only take one hour of my time per month.

Well, that was not true, but I joined anyway.

And I'm so glad I did.

It began my service to my community.

The first job I was given was to be in charge of the Volunteers for Oktoberfest.

I did such a good job that year that I was asked to do it again, and again, and again.

2006-After serving on the executive board with Mercy Velasquez and Mike Shaar, Mike handed over the gavel to me and I became president.

I had the honor of hosting many mixers, ribbon cuttings,

meetings and having a great time doing it.

I held the first Fall Arts Festival in the now parking lot of Trader Joes.

We had a couple of Bowl-a-thons at the Montrose Bowl.

I was in charge of the Art Walk along Honolulu Ave for several years. (not to be confused with the Montrose

Arts and Crafts Festival.

I was a participant in the Golf Tournament for our scholarships.

I have walked in the the Relay for Life in honor of my dad.

I spoke at our Viet Nam Memorial on Memorial Day.

My experiences within my community are treasured.

My motto has always been to support our local business and give back.

In 2020 I was asked if I would help with the Oktoberfest Volunteers again. It was a rough year with covid and we had to cancel that year.

2021-Oktoberfest is back!

I am grateful to my parents who instilled in me to be of service by showing by example.

I am grateful to all of our community who support each other and our causes.
