Lena(Huizhou) Yang

Starting playing the accordion at 4, Lena has been involved with music in choirs and concerts besides playing the accordion. Since Lena grew up, she has been participating in music not only by playing instruments but also by doing research and spreading music through more platforms, like exhibitions, radio shows. And Lena decidedly chose Musical Studies as her major after coming to Oberlin. During freshman year, Lena went to internship at both Shanghai Concert Hall and Classical FM 94.7 in her hometown, assisting in the department of public relations. In Oberlin, Lena is an active member of WOBC radio station as both a DJ in Classical Music Channel and the head of international workgroup. Besides, she participated in Performing Silent Film Scores winter term project as an accordionist and Contemporary Opera Puppy Episode as a dramaturg. And in this summer, she works in Oberlin Undergraduate Research Program with her mentor Professor James O'Leary.

2. Head of International music workgroup and hosts Classical Music radio show Free Entry at WOBC station

3. Member of Winter Term Project Performing Silent Film Scores, participating in rearranging film scores and as the concert accordionist

The program of OCRF is held from June 13th to August 5th on campus.

Lena is a member of the OCRF 2022 program. The program is held from June 13th to Aug 5th. During this program, she not only does research with her mentor Professor James O'Leary from Musicology department but also engages in the weekly activities with her colleagues coming from diverse fields. The weekly activities includes the professional skills workshops. For her research project, she does research in a contemporary opera Two Boys by Nico Muhly. She proposes that the research is important since the opera is about the Internet culture in the 21st Century, and the two boys began their complex relationship when they met online. Moreover, it was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in 2013. She investigates how Muhly updates composer Benjamin Britten's operas for the 21st Century in Two Boys.
