Matthew Sullivan began his law enforcement career in 2013 as a Police Officer with the New York City Police Department. Upon gradation from the Police Academy, he was assigned to the 75th Precinct and then the 101st Precinct. During his time with the NYPD, he was proactive in addressing quality of life concerns and violent criminal incidents. He then began his Suffolk County Police Department career in 2015, where he was assigned to First Precinct Patrol and patrolled the Wyandanch area. He was then transferred to First Precinct Crime Section (CSU) in December of 2018. During the his time assigned to First Precinct Patrol and CSU, he was consistently proactive and intelligently aggressive in addressing quality of life issues and the criminal elements plaguing the Wyandanch community and quickly gained knowledge of gang sets, their members and the ongoing issues among rival gangs. He was regularly able to extract and obtain pertinent information during debriefings of arrestees and informants, which allowed him to cultivate numerous confidential informants which lead to numerous search warrants being conducted resulting in arrests being made. He has gained professional experience working with narcotics detectives and US Marshals Service Task Force Detectives in the execution of the aforementioned search warrants. He also has worked closely with Suffolk County Probation and Parole while apprehending absconders in the First Precinct area and has worked with the joint Human Trafficking Task Force during arrests and investigations. In August of 2019, he began his assignment in First Precinct Crime Section. During this time, he gained experience in investigative case work and closed many cases with arrests. He gained experience and proficiency in issuing photo arrays, taking witness / victim statements and obtaining confessions from arrestees. While assigned to First Precinct Crime Control, he continued to proactively make street arrests during breaks in case work assignments. In May 2021, he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to Fifth Precinct Patrol. As a Patrol supervisor, he consistently practiced a transformative style of supervision, focusing on skills development, search and seizure education and positive reinforcement with his officers. He has continuously assisted his officers in identifying their professional goals and has developed a self-motivated work ethic amongst them which resulted in a increase of productivity. He regularly engaged in training his officers on how to be intelligently proactive and address crime and conditions in their sectors. He has also assigned and supervised his highest performing officers in plainclothes assignments focused on suppressing ongoing pattern crimes resulting in firearms arrests. He has supervised crime scenes including: homicide, gunfire, arson and assault incidents, numerous barricaded subjects, credible school shooting incidents resulting in an arrest and recovered weapon, serious physical injury and fatal motor vehicle accidents, sex offense investigations and other routine and unusual calls for service. He has also attended numerous outside agency paid training classes concerning narcotics investigations. In February of 2024, he was assigned to the Fifth Precinct Community Unit as it's supervisor, where he primarily dealt with special event planning and assigning his personnel to community complaints and community events.
