The UC Santa Cruz Anthropology Department awards large monetary sums to assist with the costs of faculty-sponsored independent research, research-related travel, or travel to academic conferences. This award is offered to one student candidate who presents a concrete, well-conceived research project endorsed by a faculty member. Known as "Ryan’s Travel Money," this award comes from an endowment provided by Ryan Heumann’s family, supporting his passion for knowledge and cultural understanding.
