My 6th Grade teacher died last week. If you don’t mind I’d like to share what I wrote about this WW2 veteran & educator.

From a natural born journalist ...

“The clock read, 14 minutes after the hour. Where is Mr. Yoakum? Something must be up. He is never late returning from lunch. And then a man awkwardly slid through the doorway. It looks like Mr. Yoakum, our great 6th Grade teacher & Principal, but it wasn’t. This man was someone I had never seen. It seems something is on his mind & then he turns at his desk to face this class of innocents and says, “There is some really terrible news,” pausing to take a quick deep breath, “President Kennedy has been shot in Dallas!” A Catholic girl in the middle row of desks shrieks loudly amid quieter cries from some of the young female students. It was an afternoon like none other in this now matured life. The puzzled, dignified, sad, but composed Mr. Yoakum marched us through this Friday afternoon as if we were preparing to storm the beach at Normandy. History - and a lonely school leader said not another word about the World-class tragedy. He offered no answers, but Mr. Yoakum was there for us that day & forever!
