During my time volunteering at Bring On The Spectrum, a sensory gym located in Albany, New York, I had the opportunity to support neurodiverse individuals, especially children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and sensory processing challenges. The gym provides a welcoming and inclusive environment that fosters social, emotional, and physical development through play-based activities and therapeutic tools. As a volunteer, I assisted children by guiding them through sensory-friendly stations, including swings, crash pads, and interactive light boards.A big part of my role was adapting activities to meet each child’s unique needs. Some kids needed more structure and repetition, while others thrived with creative freedom. I worked closely with staff and caregivers to ensure the kids felt safe and engaged. One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing moments of growth, whether it was a child trying a new activity for the first time or expressing themselves more openly through art or movement.
