  • While patients are staying inpatient, it was the responsibility of the Medical Assistant to perform Urine Drug Screens, specimen collections (completing physician orders) blood draws, medication passes, wound care, provide patients with information for after care, housing, and treatment
  • Often, patients are going through a severe detox and need monitoring the medical assistance watches for signs and symptoms that may be indicators of serious medical conditions such as seizures, suicidal ideations, and death itself occurring from withdrawal and reporting back to the charge nurse

  • As a medical assistant in this environment, evaluating patients to ensure they were in full withdrawal to start the program was essential
  • If a patient is not in full withdrawal giving them medications such as suboxone with throw them into full withdrawal which may not sound worse but what it does to the human body is
  • Vitals, drugs screens, breathalyzers for alcohol screening are required, even if their drug of choice is not alcohol
  • A full medical evaluation with the physician is also a requirement in which the medical assistant is a part of
  • Histories, length of drug use, medications, and any wounds the patient may have been noted for their EMR
  • Currently, if the patient is not in full withdrawal, they are transferred to the detox unit to begin the detox process
  • If they are ready to start the outpatient process, they are given their first dose of medication, and the medical assistant starts the onboarding of medication
  • The onboarding process needs to be monitored closely between the medical assistant and the physician overseeing the process
  • In each dose symptoms of the withdrawal decrease allowing the physician to see what the correct starting dose is
  • At each level, the medical assistant evaluates these signs, shaking, sweat, nausea, chills, vitals, and reports to physicians
  • Medical assistants are also Soley responsible as case managers reporting and checking in with patients and their recovery programs, managing medication refills, answering questions as needed
