I am interested in many different aspects of psychology such as forensic psychology and aspects of clinical psychology. I am interested in forensic psychology due to the crime documentaries that I watch all the time and showing interest in the psychological aspect of those killers because how can someone have no remorse or emotions for their actions. Some aspects of clinical psychology that I find the most interesting is certain neurological disorders such as Alzeimers because I have family history with Alzeimer's since my grandma had it, it really made me realize how sad it is and the fact that there isn't any cure for it makes it even more interesting.
I conducted two major types of volunteer work. One occurred during my junior year of high school at an animal shelter for trauma-suffering pets in Bulgaria while the other occurred at Gracepoint during this year where I interned for them for a little over 120 hours. Both internships were extremely beneficial to me because they really allowed me to see the impact that psychology has on not only animals but people primarily. The internship at the animal shelter was extremely eye-opening as it gave a different perspective on psychology and how it functioned in an animal brain. Animals too can have fears and trauma, while at the animal shelter, I tended to these animals everyday, giving them baths, feeding them, Spend time with animals to provide companionship and help them become more comfortable around people. This is especially important for animals that may have experienced trauma or neglect. Take dogs for walks, play with cats, and ensure animals are getting the necessary exercise and mental stimulation. Help manage supplies, such as food, cleaning products, and toys, ensuring the shelter has everything it needs to care for the animals. Help enter data into the shelter’s system, such as details about incoming animals, their medical needs, and adoption status. On the other hand my internship at Gracepoint gave me more experience in the mental health field and providing perspective on the spectrum that comes with the mental health field. As a Behavioral Health Technician, I work directly with individuals facing mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, or developmental disabilities, providing essential support to help them manage their symptoms and behaviors. My role involves monitoring and observing patients, documenting any changes in their mood, behavior, or mental state, and tracking their progress over time. I assist patients with daily activities, such as eating, grooming, and personal hygiene, and help implement individualized treatment and behavior management plans. This includes reinforcing positive behaviors, redirecting negative actions, and teaching coping skills to help patients manage stress or difficult emotions. During therapy sessions, I support patients by facilitating group activities, providing encouragement, and helping them engage in their treatment.
