  • As a server, I developed the skill of language use in different settings. When you are communicating with a customer, the verbiage you use creates a picture in the customer's head. You can create a much more attractive picture just by using different language. This is an important skill to have for my future career

  • As a catering chef, the executive chef and I would handle large volumes of food for multiple events, some even on the same day. Catering taught me how to "cater" to people's needs politely, as well as time management skills, by knowing when everything needed to be prepared to get the meal out at a specific time. I was also able to help with the creation of new menu items, as well as the ability to be creative with what I was making. The experience that I value most from being a catering chef is the ability to problem-solve rapidly. In the kitchen, anything can go wrong; being able to think on your feet and do it at a pace that you're able to get back on track is a useful skill for my future career.

  • Throughout my early years, and as I get older, I have always had an interest in being an entrepreneur. I found it fascinating that entrepreneurs have one brilliant idea to which they dedicate their life's values. My close associate and I created a 'Sneaker-Selling' business in our local area. We created a social media page for the business, as well as business cards and flyers, to hand out around our community. We would research the trends of the market and create visuals of the price fluctuations of the most popular pairs. By using these graphs, we attempted to buy certain pairs at an all-time low and sell them when the price would spike high. Creating this business taught me skills that I use daily. While selling the shoes, I learned to understand everything about the specific pairs that I was selling, to sell more pairs to the customers using my knowledge. By working with people all the time and negotiating prices, I learned to be more confident in front of strangers and crowds. It taught me how to speak confidently and work with people in a way that is respectful and creates a win-win scenario for all parties involved. Lastly, it taught me the skill of creating relationships and networking with different people in order to obtain different pairs of shoes for a price that would receive the most marginal profit possible while still maintaining the quality of the shoe for the customer.
