Dock Lead

XPO LOGISTICS
09.2020 - Current
  • I began working at XPO as a dockworker on the FAC shift. Here my responsibilities were essentially the same as my previous job at FED EX, however, XPO dealt with a much higher volume of freight so that was a bit of an adjustment at first.
  • About 5 months into my time at XPO, the supervisor on the FAC shift was terminated and I assumed the role of supervisor for about a 3–4-month period.
  • Being in this position was something I was unfamiliar with and definitely took me out of my comfort zone at first, but it was a quick turnaround.
  • This position encompasses so much in terms of responsibilities, but overall, the responsibility is to make sure the shift is running smoothly.
  • As the acting supervisor I had to come in early and set up the shift, making sure that I’m aware of all the trailers that I plan on us breaking through the night, and the number of trailers I planned on us sending out that night.
  • I had to constantly be aware of what’s going on, the progress on trailers we are breaking and trailers we still have yet to break. Sending trailers away when emptied and calling up new trailers consistently to make sure the dock is turning smoothly.
  • I also had to create and adjust routes that were going to be going out for delivery.
  • I was also in charge of employee’s lunches and making sure they were all being taken in a timely manner.
  • Performance tracking and making sure all employees are up to speed and meeting goal throughout the night.
  • I led daily pre-shift meetings where I would give the crew a rundown of the night and let them know the expectations, while also emphasizing a weekly safety topic.
  • As the supervisor there were many times when I had to make quick and important decisions while keeping the best interest of everyone in mind.
  • Over time I got very familiar with the operating system and the planning and set up of the shift started to come easy.
  • There are a lot of different personalities and a lot of different people you come into contact with in the transportation industry, and I feel as if I was able to mesh well and have a positive working relationship with every type of person.
  • With that being said, there were a few heated moments in my time as supervisor whether it be between myself and a driver, or two of the dockworkers, in which I had to deescalate the situations in the best and safest way possible.
  • Once this period of being the acting supervisor ended, XPO hired on a new supervisor and I became the dock lead.
  • Although I was the lead, I was also the one who trained the new supervisor, and I currently act as an extension of the supervisor on the dock while still assisting him whenever necessary.
  • At XPO I have seen the most advancement and growth of any job I’ve had.

Dock Worker

FEDEX FREIGHT
11.2017 - 01.2021
  • I began working at FED EX on the inbound shift with almost no knowledge of the freight business or working in a cross-dock environment.
  • We had a fairly small crew which I feel ended up working out well for me as I was forced to catch up to speed.
  • Our responsibilities were to unload the trailers that came in from the line drivers overnight and load that freight onto routes out to be delivered.
  • I worked the inbound shift for about 4 months before moving primarily to outbound.
  • On the Outbound shift, our responsibilities were to unload all the pickups that driver had gotten throughout the day, reweigh every single piece of freight, and load that freight onto outgoing trailers.
  • I worked on this shift for about 2 years where I essentially became the lead as we only had 2 dockworkers on our shift, myself and a less-experienced employee.
  • We had 3 lanes that we would load freight into and I was in charge of watching the trailer count, making sure we weren’t building more than our drivers could move while also making sure every single piece of freight gets loaded out.
  • I also was in charge of creating headloads or proper trailers and making sure we didn’t unnecessarily mix freight.
  • This facility didn’t have the volume of freight to hire full-time dockworkers, so there were times I was forced to work the inbound and outbound shifts for weeks on end.
  • I left this job on my own terms as I was just part-time and needed something more for myself.
  • The last 3-4 months at this job I began working another job as a dockworker at XPO LOGISTICS and was juggling both of them at once, leading to me working 16–17-hour days sometimes.
  • This is the job that set me on to the career path I am today.

Customer Support

best buy
11.2019 - 01.2020
  • Although this was just a seasonal job, there are a lot of different skills I picked up in the short amount of time.
  • I worked in Customer Service where I would mainly assist customers with their online orders, returns, and really any issue they needed help with.
  • This was a great learning experience as customers coming to return items were typically fired up and were ready to let you hear about it.
  • I had to be able to calm the customers down and let them know that I was only here to help.
  • After a while I got very comfortable problem solving even while being berated by customers.
  • When assisting customers with online orders, there were a few instances where I had to go back to the warehouse area and get the item myself.
  • Because of this I learned to operate the 'order-picker' forklift that they used.
  • I came onto BEST BUY towards the end of November which is by far their busiest time of the year which made me more adept in working efficiently in a chaotic environment.
  • I was offered a full-time position at BEST BUY after my seasonal employment had ended, however I turned it down because I was already working a second job at the time.

Stocker

LOWES HOME IMPROVEMENT WAREHOUSE
03.2016 - 11.2017
  • I began working with Lowes as a seasonal Front Loader where I would assist customers with loading heavy merchandise into their vehicles but shortly after I switched positions and became a Stocker.
  • As a Stocker, my responsibilities were to unload the merchandise from the trucks each night and stack the product onto pallets that we would then take out to the floor and put on display.
  • This job was my introduction to the transportation/warehouse industry as I spent the bulk of my time at Lowes working in shipping and receiving.
