Bronze Star for Heroism Combat

For heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist 4 Barrera distinguished  himself while serving as a team leader with Company A, 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. On March 10th 1969, Spec. Barrera's unit was conducting a sweep operation near Kontum when they were engaged by a large North Vietnamese force. During the initial contact, the heavy volume of fire caused the company to split into two elements. Exposing  himself to the  intense  enemy fire, Specialist Barrera moved to the lead element and distributed badly neede ammunition. he  again risked his life by moving forward to reinforce members of the second platoon who were cut off and pinned down. Specialist Barrera's personal bravery, initiative, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of themilitary service and reflect great credit upon himself his unit, and the United States Army.

Awarded By the direction of the President of the United States, under the provisions of Executive Order 11046 of 24 August 1962
