Summary

I turned 50 years young this year. About 7 or so years ago I met an individual who ran the service department for a reputable generator company. After speaking with him I thought it sounded interesting, but the money was quite a ways off from what I was making as an electrician for the union. I had over 21 years in at that point. Plus I've never had any diesel experience and my automotive experience was minor. However, I did possess good mechanical abilities and the desire to learn a different tradecraft. After several months, I called him back and had an interview. I was a little nervous starting a new career at 40+ It was one of the best decisions I've made. I never knew that I could enjoy going into work every day. The generator field is challenging and with roughly 5+ years in, there is always something new to learn or a better more efficient way of completing routine maintenance. I not afraid to ask questions if there’s an assigned task that Im not familiar with. Speaking with a customer and explaining what you are there to do and knowing every customer has a different level of understanding when it comes to generators and transfer switches. And to be able to adjust to every level without being condescending. I believe there are 5 keys to being a successful generator technician. 1)Good communication with the shop and customer. 2) Performing the task at hand safely and efficiently. 3) Paper/computer work completed right after work is complete. 4) Continuing education or certifications. 5) Showing up to work everyday, on time and being able to be on call. Being dependable has always been important to me. I've lived in the Overland Park area for almost 30 years. Grew up in a small town west of Topeka. I have one son who just graduated from Kstate. So working late or out of town is not a problem.
