My experience in emergency medicine has challenged my critical thinking skills and use of creative skills in a fast-paced, high- acuity medical environment. For the past 5 years, I have worked as an inpatient nurse case manager for Kaiser at Emory Midtown and Piedmont hospitals. During the Pandemic, I was provided the opportunity to successively work remotely, while continuing to meet all job responsibilities as an Inpatient RN Case Manager. As a registered nurse with 22 years of dedicated knowledge, skill, exceptional experience, and patient education continues to inspire my role as an evolving healthcare professional.

  • Completed a contract at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan as a remote RN Care Manager
  • Responsibilities included outreaching BCBSM members, utilizing motivational interviewing skills to build a rapport with members by assisting with health goals, promoting compliance with medications and plan of care
  • Providing education on disease processes in order to prevent progression of medical conditions
  • Promoted members to take charge of health conditions by grasping the concept of condition management
  • Introduced different vendors to members, such as Livongo for management of diabetes and Genex for members who were considered catastrophic and required complex assistance

  • Worked as an inpatient case manager and work responsibilities included completing assessments for new admissions, rounding with hospital medicine providers, and creating safe, attainable post discharge care plans for patients who were approaching hospital discharge
  • Goals included decreasing length of stay, providing patient education especially ensuring that patients fully understood the post-discharge plan to prevent readmission to the hospital

  • This position was remote and daily I communicated with other RNs at various hospital facilities for our doctors to perform a Peer-to-Peer review with non-Kaiser physicians
  • Our goal was to repatriate patients from non-Kaiser hospitals to Kaiser hospitals once stabilized
  • Also arranged transportation for patients that were able to be repatriated and communicated with other emergency care management staff daily.

  • Responsibilities include collaboration with Internal Medicine Hospitalist and other specialties such as Infectious Disease, Surgical Oncology and Nephrology to ensure that the patient is without any gaps of care during the hospital admission
  • Implementation of appropriate, safe discharge care plans which may include home with home IV antibiotic therapy, inpatient/outpatient short-term rehabilitation, home-health services, arranging inpatient/outpatient Hospice, providing durable medical equipment as indicated and ensuring that the patient’s family is well informed during the admission process and especially the discharge care plan
  • Creating attainable discharge plans for patient(s) to reduce the risk for readmission and encouraging outpatient compliance with primary care and other specialties
  • Collaborating directly with contracted vendors to assist in attaining a safe, realistic discharge plan
  • Daily rounding with the physician which includes but not limited to current medical status, ordering and completion of diagnostics within a timely manner and a thorough discussion for discharge planning needs and education
  • Performed utilization review (UM) using MCG criteria for all inpatient and observation hospital admissions, this also included concurrent review
  • Lastly but most importantly, providing patient/family education on chronic or acute conditions by promoting medication compliance and post-hospital discharge follow-up care.

Urgent Care/Ambulatory Care clinic Staff RN

  • Lead Healthcare Team RN for Adult Internal Medicine, also cross-trained for Pediatrics for primary care
  • Focused on preventative care and management of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia while assisting in the prevention disease progression
  • Served as a crucial resource for the healthcare team which includes a LPN, physician, and Kaiser members
  • Participated in conscious sedation with each assignment physician
  • Time-out was performed prior to each conscious sedation procedures to ensure that we were performing the correct procedure for the right patient as well as following all universal precautions for patient safety
  • Responsibilities all included inventory of medication for the department and maintaining records for managerial review or audit
  • Functioned as a liaison between other departments involved such as the lab and pharmacy
  • Ensuring that the clinical schedules are accurate and that Kaiser members are appropriately scheduled for appointments that may or may not be necessary
  • Provides teaching for members that are newly diagnosed with Diabetes, which includes diet, medication management, self-insulin administration if indicated and providing the member with resources such as classes and other forms of outreach
  • Performs & interpret EKGs, IV therapy, medication/vaccine administration and member/family-centered education
  • Awareness of HEDIS measurements to assist in preventative care along with testing such as mammograms, PAP SMEARS, Diabetic Retinal Exams, and Immunizations

  • Emory Adventist Hospital ER was a small facility with approximately 12 to 14 beds and although most of our patient population didn’t exhibit severe acuity, however on occasion there were patients in our department with severe acuity who required transportation to larger facilities in order to obtain a higher level of care
  • Responsibilities included RN patient triage, charge nursing and initiation of standing order protocols while working in conjunction with the ER attending to provide immediate care for patients
  • Team-work oriented environment and practiced appropriate RN delegation when needed
  • Constant communication with other departments such as lab, x-ray, and CT, especially during after-hours because most techs for these departments had to be called in due to the small size of the facility
  • Therefore, as the RN, it was my responsibility to ensure that the departments were alerted for diagnostics to be performed in a timely manner
  • Initiation of IV(s), IV therapy, administering of PO/IM/IV and assisting physicians with the insertion of central lines
  • Also performed EKGs, assisted with pelvic exams, conscious sedations, cardiovascular monitoring for patients being held for ICU admission or patients awaiting to be transferred to a facility of higher care

  • Worked as travel RN for emergency rooms in various states including Minnesota, D.C., and New York

  • Orientation is minimal when working as a travel RN during work action assignments and therefore the expectations for independency with efficiency while maintain all standard levels of care
  • In addition to the work action assignments, I completed an 8-week contract at Washington Hospital Center ER in Washington, D.C
  • The ER had sixty beds and the acuity levels were extremely complex
  • The facility had ae extremely high rate of HIV positive patients including all populations due to the city’s high rate of IV drug use
  • Care populations also included acutely/chronically ill patients with hypertensive emergency, CVAs, acute MI and DKA
  • Responsibilities included initiation of standing nurse protocols, difficult IV insertion, administering vasopressors, conscious sedation, performing EKGs, foley catheter insertion/care and stabilization of ICU holds until transferred to the unit
  • Ensuring that patients had ordered diagnostics such as x-rays, CT and MRIs performed and communication of results with the ER physician
  • Work-action assignments (RN Strikes) completed included a 24-hour nursing strike in Minneapolis, MN and a 5-day strike in Washington, D.C

  • Began my ER residency at EUHM in the emergency department and for a course of 3 months I shadowed an RN as well as collaborating closely with other ancillary staff to become accustomed to my new profession
  • After residency, I remained at EUHM for 8 years as a staff RN, charge nurse and preceptor
  • During this time, the hospital was migrating from paper charting to electronic medical records, so the ability to adapt was extremely important
  • Responsibilities were consistent with working as an ER nurse and included working closely with ER attending physicians and residents, utilizing standing protocols, nurse triage and functioned as assigned charge nurse, ensuring that the department is functioning safely and effectively
  • Leadership skills were valuable as charge nurse because responsibilities increased such as directing EMS traffic, learning to be creative in providing safe patient care even when staffing is low, and the volume is high
  • Remaining aware of patients that were considered level one and ICU bound while ICU beds were unavailable
