Work History

Union Representative

UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO
08.2020 - 09.2021
  • Summary of Position Worked as a full-time Union Representative of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO. I was offered a full time position at the end of the 2020 internship program and was responsible for the representation of the County's Parks and Planning division. My member base was made up of a large portion of the men and women that worked on and maintained the County's 300+ public parks and recreational areas. I attended meetings, provided activity reports, and thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the Union President, other representatives/assistants, and our three secretaries. As a full time representative, my responsibilities included:
  • Intermediating grievance proceedings between Union members and management
  • Reviewing worker's compensation claims
  • Recruiting two shop stewards for larger county facilities who were in need of a more direct line of communication with the Union
  • Assisting fellow representative Lisa Blackwell in editing The Montgomery County/UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO Collective Bargaining Agreement for clarity and brevity. The draft was later submitted and reviewed by the county for the renewal process
  • Continuing member outreach as needed, specifically when there was County or Union news, Union events, implementation or relaxation of Covid19 protocols, etc.
  • Arguing on behalf of members for their respective needs in the hectic period of Covid19 and the subsequent relaxation of restrictions. Each member had different preferences, and the Union had to approach grievances that arose delicately and with much good-faith collaboration with County management
  • Effectively intermediating between members and management and arguing on behalf of members in termination and disciplinary hearings

Summer Organizing Internship Program

UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO
06.2020 - 08.2020
  • Summary of Position: Worked as a seasonal intern under Organizing Coordinator and Special Assistant to the President, Raymun Lee at Local 1994 MCGEO headquarters. This was my second summer working as an intern for the Union, in which Ray Lee appointed me team-lead for the extent of the program. Much of the learning, and many of the responsibilities carried out in this iteration of the program simply compounded upon what I had learned and done in the previous year. Therefore, for the sake of brevity, I will only list new knowledge accrued and responsibilities I carried out as team-lead;
  • Spearheaded a week-long phone-banking initiative aimed at assessing public opinion of candidates for the upcoming county election season. The initiative was hosted through a third party website that allowed my team to make calls from a virtual list of citizens, ask opinion questions, and then record the information given. At the end of the initiative, the Union compiled our data from the website and I was responsible for submitting a brief report of my colleagues findings and experiences
  • As team-lead, I was responsible for coordinating and transporting my colleagues to various "door-knocking" opportunities around the county. These endeavors usually entailed traveling to a list of homes of our members, and informing them of upcoming Union events, bargaining outcomes, or County news via the distribution of written media
  • This summer I was guided in learning the intricacies of the position of Union representative itself. Ray Lee commonly took me with him to shadow his day-to-day dealings as a very effective and well-respected member of the Union's representation team. Through Ray's tutelage, I learned more about the grievance process, how to intermediate between members and management, how to go about recruiting shop stewards and their importance to collective bargaining, and how member disciplinary action is decided upon by management

Summer Organizing Intern Program

UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO
06.2019 - 08.2019
  • Summary of Position: Worked as a seasonal intern under Organizing Coordinator and Special Assistant to the President, Raymun Lee at Local 1994 MCGEO headquarters. This Union represents the employees of the municipal departments of Montgomery County, Maryland. (ex. D.O.T, Code Enforcement, Police, Fire, Parks Dept., Libraries, etc.) The four interns in this program were awarded a wide range of responsibilities and experiences that well reflected those of full-fledged union representatives and organizers. These included:
  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of the nature, need for, and implementation of the Union's member representation
  • Becoming intimately familiar with the Montgomery County/UFCW Local 1994 Collective Bargaining Agreement or "CBA"
  • Studying the Union's grievance process as lain out by Montgomery County/ Local 1994 CBA
  • Becoming intimately familiar with the nature of a Union representative's day-to-day workload due to our proximity to Ray Lee
  • Becoming familiar with local politics, specifically in the context of how they affected the Union's collective bargaining efforts
  • Traveling to inter-union events such as the 2019 Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, in an educational capacity
  • Touring various represented county departments and meeting union members, shop stewards, and county management
  • The intern team, under the direction of Ray Lee, was responsible for planning a Union basketball tournament to take place in fall 2019. I independently sourced a local T-shirt manufacturer and party implement provider for the tournament and it's peripheral family-oriented activities
