The Glacier Park Boat Company operates six classic wooden tour boats across five stunning high alpine lakes in Glacier National Park. Our vessels, ranging from 50 to 60 feet in length, boast an impressive history, with some being nearly 98 years old. My role involved conducting regular inspections and carrying out preventive maintenance to ensure the boats were always ready and in line with the safety standards set by the National Coast Guard and the National Park Service. I also took the lead during maritime emergencies, including medical situations and rescue operations, showcasing my ability to make quick decisions and coordinate effectively with the team under pressure. In addition, I trained crew members in a variety of essential skills, such as boat operations, emergency procedures, safety protocols, fire suppression techniques, equipment usage, customer service, and public speaking. This helped foster a culture of safety and preparedness in potentially hazardous situations. A significant part of my work also entailed maintaining our employee housing, which included tasks like painting, electrical repairs, and plumbing.
This job was similar to my current position, but it required me to be more responsible and focused on a single lake. I managed a crew of 7 to 11 people, training them in all aspects of the job. I lived and worked alongside my crew, which involved fostering camaraderie among strangers while working and living in close quarters. It was a high-stress job where we often spent up to six months without cell service or internet access.
My role involved providing rehabilitation and support for clients, all of whom were adults with severe mental disabilities. My responsibilities included keeping clients company, assisting them with errands, managing a day center each Sunday, and delivering medication to clients' homes or to the local homeless shelter, the Poverello Center, every night. This job required great compassion and helped me develop valuable skills in de-escalating situations and exercising patience. Additionally, I interacted with diverse individuals with whom I could always find common ground.
