Depending on the shift/position, there are different responsibilities.
Runner: every 1.5 hours, deliver medications, including IV medication, to respective floors, collect and put away any unused medication and return bins, stock, Omni cell medication machines, Ensure that patient medication box has no other medicines belonging to any other patient, assist other technicians with any extra work in the pharmacy, deliver narcotics to respective areas, actively communicate with other hospital employees such as nurses about locations of medications, etc.
MedCar: manually pull the selected items for the Omni cell medication machine restocks regularly, pull out first doses, constantly watch the Omni cell robot, and remove any medication from the drawers or any Omni machine restock bags. Once a specific machine restock is completed, deliver it to the pharmacist area so that it may be checked and delivered by the other technicians. Pull fills for offsite locations, pull the bulk bottles of medication to be packaged, prepare patient-specific envelopes for daily cart fill updates, pull “stock out” medications, and assist couriers when they pick up medication.
Oral station: assist MedCar with anything during free time, prepare home medications for daily cart fill update, deliver six restocks for Omni machines, prepare any empty/low oral medications, prepare patient-specific oral medications (including pediatrics), and take special deliveries (stat / requested).
IV Lab: prepare IV medication run, stock the required materials in the lab, prepare emergency IV medications (OR and CT), prepare first dose/new start medications, prepare bulk medications (Ceftriaxone, Cefepime, Vancomycin, Zosyn, Phenylephrine, Iron sucrose, etc.), and clean IV lab appropriately.
Typical tasks: for all technicians (except IV lab) to do in spare time. Package bulk bottle medications, prepare/clean code trays and rapid response boxes, assist Medcar with daily cart fill updates (prepare envelopes), take special deliveries, assist in robot and Medcar restock, prepare oral medications (if the oral station is busy or medication is needed stat), and any other housekeeping responsibilities for pharmacy.
Pharmacy: Assist pharmacy technicians with unpacking and restocking in the pharmacy, along with other tasks to keep medications updated within the pharmacy.
ASC: Assist nurses in discharges, clean patient bays, provide snacks and drinks to patients, and keep rotating blankets into blanket warmers.
