Published Research Paper

Rett syndrome (RTT) is a rare female neuropsychiatric disorder caused by mutations in the X-linked methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 gene (MECP2). These loss-of-function mutations lead to atypical epigenetic regulation and regression after 6–18 months of normal development. RTT patients often enter puberty earlier and reach menarche later, but the relationship between MECP2 mutations and pubertal development is not understood. This study found no differences in pubertal onset or estrous cycling between Mecp2 heterozygous and WT mice, suggesting further hormone-centered studies are needed.
