Projects

Ocean Debri Classification Project

  • The Surfrider Foundation is engaged in finding and collecting derelict hagfish traps that
are washing up on Hawaii’s coastlines. The cone or funnel-shaped entrances of these traps are
especially dangerous to the endangered monk seal whose pups often get them caught on their
    snout.
  • The Surfrider Foundation has requested a system to help them better understand how to
classify the collected traps based on a series of distinctively visual features. To answer this
request, we, the marine debris team, have worked closely with Dr. Carl Berg, Senior Scientist for
the North Pacific Hagfish Project representing The Surfrider Foundation, and Dr. Travis Mandel,
Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo to research and
apply multiple machine learning approaches to the problem of classifying these traps.
  • Our goal was to create software that would group hagfish traps into similar clusters for
easier counting and labeling and to determine which traps come from the same fishery. This
software operates using images as input and then clusters similar traps together. To accomplish
this, we needed two things: a feature extractor, which looks at the image and creates a
meaningful representation of its main features, and a clustering algorithm, which would group
these images based on similar features.
