I have been working as a Medical Assistant at Needham (Dedham) OB/GYN for over 23 years. Because obstetrics and gynecology are a specialty, many of my skills have been learned on the job. It is my job to prep charts, check vitals, and assist the doctor when needed, with exams and procedures such as pap smears, endometrial biopsies, colposcopies, endosees and leeps. I have polished my skills over time, but the most important skill and the one I am most proud of is one I have been told can't be taught. I know it can be stressful to be at the doctors especially for a procedure. It is important that patients are as comfortable as possible, physically as well as emotionally. I have been known to calm a young woman who thinks she must have cancer, bring down a blood pressure with a little mood music or just a smile. Over the last 7 years I have added birth and postpartum doula courses, becoming certified as a PP doula as well as becoming a CLC . I would like to use my lactation education skills more than I do now and would love to get into a hospital setting to help moms get started on the right track.
