Audiology Technician (Contractor) - Hearing Conservationist

- Operated and served as the Lead Audiology Technician for the Hearing Conservation Program for 4th Infantry Division and its civilians.
- Lowered the hearing injury rate to less than 4%, the lowest in the Army (+72,000 service members received audiometric testing under my examination).
- Scheduled patients and operated hearing tests, performed otoscopy, earmold impressions, otoacoustic emissions (OAE) testing; Completed periodic range base camp surveys to ensure proper use of hearing protection and noise abatement strategies, and performed hearing safety briefings. Daily duties included: conducting hearing tests in multi-person booths using DOEHRS-HC (Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System- Hearing Conservation) application (used for both garrison and deployed operations, is mandated by various DOD policies and public laws and is the system of record for the DOD individual longitudinal exposure record), utilizing functional checks for each audiometer before daily testing, reading calibrations, reviewing records and explaining results to patients, coordinating with audiologists for follow-up patients who showed STS or hearing profile changes, and providing education on effects of hazardous noise which includes proper hearing protection issued and fitted for each soldier.
- In addition to coordinating hearing conservation activities with Occupational Health personnel, Unit Hearing Conservation Officers, and supervisors, I also surveillance local hearing conservation programs. I coordinated coverage, inspections and completion of final reports for the Army Hearing Program Manager. This also includes coordinating the maintenance and calibration of DOEHRS-HC equipment and ensures that uploads to the DOEHRS-HC registry are backed-up.
- Accomplishments include educating units and companies before deployments on effects of hazardous noise and being able to provide hearing conservation training to medics on Fort Carson. I would supervise medics in the Army hearing program to ensure standards were set and the SOP was followed. I worked in close contact with my chief, COL Curry-Mathis who was implementing Phase III of her research. Data that was collected was then published under The Hearing Center of Excellence, which focuses on the effects of hearing loss before, during, and after the mission was completed.
- Fostered and initiated a medical team of eight service members in the hearing conservation clinic, including medics on rotation that went through the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) course. Advocated for hearing health education across Post and participated in lectures. I also supported 10th Group, Special Forces at Fort Carson, as well as Butts Army Airfield (who supports 2nd Brigade and 4th Combat Aviation Brigade).
- Debriefed and fit-checked (testing for seal with ear pro) for 300+ service members before deployments. Our goals included providing epidemiological evidence to support and sustain current effective measures, and by understanding and educating, prevention is possible.

Tools that are being practiced: provide clinical services to individuals with communicative and hearing disorders. Provide consultative services to agencies in the community, using facilities and opportunities to develop diagnostic and clinical skills to demonstrate competencies required for entry in the professions, and to promote the generation and dissemination of new information through clinically applicable research.
- Completion of a training program in professional and scholarly integrity course modules on the CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) website during the Scholarly Integrity course (CSD 940G) prior to the start of my nonthesis (Capstone).
