My first job I held while attending High School in 1975. I worked for an organization then called Project Independence. I worked nights after school helping the elderly and disabled with cleaning, preparing meals and grocery shopping.
I learned at that time that i really enjoyed working for folks that needed that extra care and compassion.
Although i do not have the education background i do have the commitment and drive to be there in the moment for clients. I am currently taking courses on line through VT. Coalition to End Homelessness to improve my skills and be the best i can be for every client that comes through our doors.
I started working for the Samaritan House this past April 2022. I work as a shelter support staff. My responsibilities include putting the clients first. Helping clients when they are in distress due to there temporary homelessness, helping clients brainstorm ways they can help control anxieties, and also just always being there for them in the moment.
Working for the Samaritan House my responsibilities included , greeting each client when they came into shelter, logging in any medications and or sharp objects, helping with daily hygiene , de escalating any disagreements between clients, and also just being available when ever the client needed an ear.
